| Description: |
This is to announce the inception of a new HCUK Shared Interest Group in Classics. The intention of this group is to foster discussion and interest in any and all aspects of Classical Greek and Roman civilization such as classical literature, art, mythology, history, etc. We will meet every first Thursday of the month for informal discussion on a pre-circulated topic, as well as to relax and socialize with people of similar interests. This group is being organized by Jason Lundock (’09), who studied Anthropology and Archaeology as an undergraduate and is currently enrolled as a doctoral student at King’s College London in Classics Research. The first meeting of the group will be held at Truckle’s Wine Bar, across the street from the British Museum on Bury Place in Bloomsbury WC1A 2JR, on November 3rd. For the first meeting, I thought that an umbrella topic could be the recently published book by current Harvard Professor Dr. Stephen Greenblatt titled The Swerve: How the World Became Modern. This is a book which discusses the work of Lucretius (who wrote in the 1st century BCE on the construction of the universe by invisible molecules known as atoms) and its transmission into the Enlightenment and eventually into the Modern world. This should appeal to anyone interested in Classics generally, but especially to those interested in the science and philosophy of the ancient world and its reception by later western civilization. This is just the broad topic, and discussion will of course drift through many topics and anyone wishing to attend need not worry about brushing up too thoroughly on Lucretius, but should only wish to discuss classics with fellow alums who share an interest in the Classical world. Please email Verity Langley (vll@me.com)or Jason (lundock.jason@gmail.com) if you intend to attend, as a table will be reserved for the approximate amount of guests expected. If you decide to show up last minute, don’t worry, room will be found, the revervation is simply to have a table for our wine and snacks. I look forward to meeting you and having a relaxing evening of wine and light snacks and conversation on the Classical world.
